Thread of Time

‘Thread of Time’ translates the principles and rope techniques of scout furniture into contemporary design using only rope, without nails, screws or glue. As soon as the knots are untied, the objects disintegrate and their former identity becomes unrecognisable. The rope allows for a continuous reshaping and utilisation of resources to ensure that materials never reach a final, irreversible form in an object and can instead be reshaped again and again. On the one hand, the project emphasises the importance of material and connecting elements for sustainability, reusability and recyclability, and on the other, it questions our understanding of object, ownership and time.

Simon Rogalla

Simon Rogalla’s time in the Boy Scouts not only shaped him personally, but also had a decisive influence on his career as a designer. He completed his Master’s degree in product and wood design at the Angewandte Kunst Schneeberg and, after a short time in industry, switched to become an independent designer. In addition to combining different areas such as fashion and furniture or architecture and play, the principles of adaptability and sustainability learnt in the Scouts play a recurring role in his work.
